No 1 Gets Hurt Campaign

If you have followed my blogs for any length of time you know both my husband and myself are in the safety field. Several of our friends are as well. Inevitably when we are together the talk will come back to work. Of particular interest are the safety issues we notice on a daily basis. It could be people not wearing the appropriate PPE or standing on a stool to reach something in a cabinet. We then get into some of the unsafe things we see outside of work. This includes drivers on cell phones. By the end of the conversation, we are simply bewildered at how unaware people are about safety.

Take heart though, there is a month dedicated to the safety cause. June is National Safety Month. This year’s theme is “No 1 Gets Hurt”.

The National Safety Council (NSC) has outlined topics for each week of the month to be used at work and home. They even provide free downloadable resources in English and Spanish for each topic upon signup. I encourage you to do so as the resources are great. The link to the NSC site can be found here. Right in the middle of the page is a link for you to get your own materials. All you have to do is register. Let’s take a look at each week and expand on the ideas.

This year the topics are as follows:

  • Week 1: Emergency Preparedness
  • Week 2: Wellness
  • Week 3: Falls
  • Week 4: Driving

Week 1

For Week 1 Emergency Preparedness the tagline is “Disaster won’t wait.  Create your emergency plan now.”  Here is the perfect time to update and/or review your home and site’s safety plans. If you don’t have one, now is the time to develop one at each location.  Some people may even consider getting trained in CPR and First Aid. The NSC even has a free app called “Emergency Medical Response Quick Reference Guide” which has basic first aid guidance. The app is now available from the App Store and Google Play. Search “National Safety Council” to find and install it.

Week 2

In Week 2 for “Wellness” the focus this year is on sleep.  The NSC and other agencies all have data showing how a lack of sleep impacts worker performance and safety. Talk about it. Other components that could be added to this week include the Opioid Crisis and summer heat exposure.

Week 3

Week 3’s topic “Falls – Don’t Get Tripped Up! Clean up spills and hazards immediately” is pretty clear. Spills are an issue at home and work. Spills at both can contain hazardous and non-hazardous materials. For those that are hazardous, contact with them should be avoided and special clean up methods may be needed. As one of OSHA’s top ten violations, we again see where a workplace should have plans in place for spill response.

Week 4

In the last week of the month, driving is the topic particularly seatbelt use. As a driver you are constantly making decisions.  The first, in my opinion, is the decision to wear your seatbelt. The data is clear, wearing one saves lives. In many states there are laws requiring you to wear one.  Depending on the state, there could even be ones for those in the back seat. This is also the week to have reminders on distracted and drowsy drivers.
